bonjour! today i wanted to talk colors with you. choosing a color palette for rooms can driveme crazy. and i’ll admit it: i can spend days tryingto figure out what green or cream to use. people think that parisians have an innatesense of aesthetics because we are surrounded by so many museums, bookstores and antiqueshops; and art is everywhere. but colors and choices are intimidating toanyone. so if you aren’t sure, ask someone who willknow. ask balthus, mark rothko, lucian freud…
i’ll put references in the video description. painters are an inexhaustible source of inspirationto me… on y va? take my kitchen for example: i knew i wantedto use light grey, so i asked lucian freud for some advice. look at these two portraits. notice the green grey, cold grey, cheer colorand touch of pink… and the mustard color from the scarf thatyou find in the wood of the mirror. colors can be scary until you see them cometogether on a painting and you realize it’s all possible.
sometimes it takes a deep brown to tie togethera forest green and a coral red. so look for paintings and artists you admireto guide your choices. they can be actual. this for example is a painting by john currin. or they can be past. this is a painting by balthus that inspiredthis decor. and remember: it’s alright if you can’tafford to buy art… you don’t need to own art to invite it inyour home. you can find inspiration in a film, or ina book.
